What's My Story? I guess professional experience and practical knowledge is valuable, but perhaps my biggest credential is that I'm smack dab in the middle of the sandwich generation.
I’ve spent my career advising families on how to grow, protect, and distribute their wealth. I’ve earned credentials that my industry defines as signs of expertise and knowledge. But I argue that none of these suffixes really prepared me to know what it’s like to step into the shoes of someone trying to balance the demands of their own career and family, with the needs of an aging loved one. My resume now includes the titles shared by many of those who find themselves part of the “sandwich generation.” Titles we didn’t seek after, but were bestowed upon us because it’s real life. It’s where people are.
- Son of a father who died at age 41 leaving a widow and three children.
- Son of a second father who died of Alzheimer’s.
- Son-in-law to a third father who died of vascular dementia.
- Son of a mother, age 95 living in a skilled nursing facility with dementia.
- Financial caregiver to both parents since 2010.
- Younger brother to two siblings who shoulder much of the burden of mom’s care.
- Father to four wonderful adult children in various stages of independence and growth.
- Grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren.
- Still working full time trying to secure my own financial independence.
